Azzedine Ounahi: Reports Point to a Full Hamstring Tendon Rupture and a Return in April 2027
Reports say a second MRI scan showed that the injury to Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi of Panathinaikos is more serious than first thought, with a full rupture of the biceps femoris tendon in his right leg. The club has not yet issued an official statement.
What happened?
Ounahi was hurt on Sunday 18 October 2026 during Panathinaikos’ 5-1 win over Asteras Tripolis and left the pitch on a stretcher in the 19th or 20th minute, depending on the source. He did not travel with the squad to Kazakhstan for the 22 October match against Kairat Almaty.
The first diagnosis
Early reports, including Morocco World News citing Greek outlet ERT Sports, pointed to a severe tear of the biceps femoris and an absence of two and a half to three months, until the start of 2027. Greek reports spoke of a grade-three tear and about 15 missed matches.
What is new
According to L’ODJ, citing a source close to the Greek club, a new scan carried out nine days after the injury showed a complete rupture of the tendon, with surgery planned this week. A return in late March or early April 2027 is estimated, depending on the operation and rehabilitation. I found no official medical document or club statement confirming this.
The impact on Morocco
Ounahi is expected to miss Morocco’s two Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Niger on 13 and 17 November, according to reports. The Moroccan federation has not announced his absence officially.
What next?
The story is waiting for an official statement from Panathinaikos confirming the diagnosis, the date of surgery and the estimated absence. Estimates currently range from the start of 2027 to April 2027, so the date remains an estimate.
